How To Use The Google Picasa Program

Written by Basic-Digital-Photography.com

As you may be aware, Google has a fantastic photo ogranization and manipulation tool called Picasa. As you may be aware, Google has a fantastic photo ogranization and manipulation tool called Picasa.

The program is extremely intuitive and simple to use - I love to use it to upload photos to the web.

In this article, I'll briefly explain how you can use the Google Picasa program to good effect. Soon you'll be an expert at it and you'll be editing and uploading your digital photos like a pro.

1. Introduction

One of the most important factors in selecting a photo organization program is ease-of-use. I've tried many programs before but very few in fact pass the ease-of-use test and yet provide the in-depth capabilities you need. The only three good photo management programs I know of are ACDSee, iPhoto and Google Picasa. It's hard to beat those three - in this article, we'll focus on the Google Picasa program.

2. Easy To Use

The Google Picasa program is one of the easiest photo organization programs you can find. I like the way Picasa allows you to create albums, tag keywords and do fast indexing and searching, while keeping a good view of all your photos at once. You can also set certain folders in your PC to be 'watched', so that if there are changes in the photo files in that folder, they are automatically synched with Picasa.

3. Good Photo Editing Features

Although the Google Picasa program is primarily a photo management tool, it has some pretty solid photo editing features. For example, red eye removal is built-in, along with other cool photo effects. You need to try it out to believe it. ACDSee and iPhoto also have these photo editing features o it's a matter of which program you take a fancy on.

4. Solid Upload Support

One of the best things about the Google Picasa program is that it synchronizes seamlessly with your Google Picasa 'web album'. Any album you create in the client program in your PC will get created as a web album once you choose to synchronize to the web. No many other programs can do this.

5. It's Free, As In Beer

And the great thing about Google Picasa? Well, it's totally free - as in beer. I can't imagine Google offer this sort of thing for free - but then again, we're talking about the pioneers of Internet computing. So who knows what they have up their sleeve?

Shortcomings

One of the slight grievances I have with the Google Picasa program is that sometimes the synchronization to the web album falls apart. You see, the changes you make in the client program on your PC should synch to the web, and vice-versa. However, I find that is not always the case.

Conclusion

And there you have it - a good overview of the Google Picasa program. If you're out looking for a good photo management tool with solid web support, Picasa is the way to go. Check it out, you won't regret it. Until next time, happy photo editing!
